This is a very good question, given the costs associated with implementing software and hardware that is supposed to enable collaboration. Whether collaboration actually does occur or increases is another point entirely. If a team or division was not known for its collaborative efforts before an initiative it is unlikely that throwing resources at the problem will change things. Helping team members to develop their collaborative capacity should be the first step to creating a team that can use technology to further enhance their willingness to collaborate.

This blog post http://bit.ly/4uB4FX makes some very good arguments about where and when collaboration tools can actually work.

What does ’safe’ mean these days ? – none of us really know the direction that social media will take next and where our identity will appear. But the same sort of anxiety is being felt across the corporate world in terms of how can we share information quickly and effectively but maintain a boundry or ‘membrane’ with the outside world.

The purpose of a membrane is to allow ‘information’ to travel in both directions. In other words the question we need to ask is “How can we stay in intimate connection with the larger field of knowledge and maintain an ‘identity’ and ‘brand’ with respect to our own corpus of knowledge.

Bertrand Duperrin poses the question “Does enterprise 2.0 threaten your security ? ”

This is a core question – or should be – for people working in the field of knowledge management. Of course we should also be mindful that wherever we are going , we are going to get there sooner than we think.

As part of my continued exploration of collaboration tools, few weeks ago I took part in the three day ‘Art of Hosting’ workshop. Inspired and created by the Berkana Institute, this was an amazing event and I felt very privileged to take part. Along with a great bunch of human beings that made up the ‘training group’ there was very professional facilitation. For those of you have not heard of this work it consists of a an amalgam of several processes. The a few of the main ingredients are:

World Cafe Process

Circle Practice (Christina Baldwin)

Open Space Technology

Appreciative Inquiry

To find out more about the ‘Art of Hosting’ approach visit artofhosting TV

One of the biggest learnings for me personaly was the importance of ‘Harvesting’ – gathering the ideas, questions and insights that result from a hosted event. A short video about harvesting by one of the Berkana facilitators:

ManyOne.net has just come to my attention. It is a very intriguing approach to how to up the ante for collaboration on the Internet. As I explored the site further I discovered that the ManyOne approach really has the potential to bring some ‘civialization’ to cyberspace.

If we consider for a moment that bacteria have been living in colonies for well over 2 billion years, ants 40 million and termites for 200 million it thought provoking that we have only been organizing ourselves in colonies for 40-60 thousand years. We’re ‘babes in the woods’ as far as colony organization goes.

The Internet is the largest human colony on earth and I’m sure you would agree that it’s still a bit like the ‘Wild West’ – wander into the wrong part of town and you can see lots of unsightly stuff.

Anything that enables us to develop our on-line community to reflect the positive and life-enhancing aspects of our terrestrial communities – has got to be a good thing.

I don’t see this as a ‘nice-to-have’ development – I see this as a necessary step toward a sustainable future for our species.

I see ManyOne.net potentially making a great contribution to on-line culture along with:

www.Worldchanging.com

www.mindandlife.org

www.the elders.org

www.globalgiving.com

www.kiva.org

www.massivechange.com

I’d love to hear from people about what they think about the ManyOne.net model.

I’ve just tripped over a great little tool – Jing – it’s made by the same people that make Camtasia. Collaborating with information can be a challenge sometimes – a tool that enables you to capture all or part of your computer screen can be very handy. This little tool also enable you to capture videos of what you do on your screen. This is great if you need to show a colleague how to do something from a distance.

Here is the link to the file – http://screencast.com/t/QZtWVrvVrZ (WordPress doesn’t want to make this a live URL for some reason but don’t let that put you off) stored on the screencast server – you can send anyone thin link – just as I have included a link to a screen shot here. The only limitation I see is that you can’t store the files on your own PC.
