Microsoft VS Google: Collaborative Intelligence in Computing

Great post comparing MS with Google in relation to CQ in computing.

Google announced last night it would be developing an operating system, called Chrome OS, for release in 2010. Just as Microsoft takes aim at Google’s search expertise with Bing, Google is launching Chrome OS (operating system) to compete head-to-head with the software juggernaut’s bread and butter.

Do Collaboration Tools Work?

This is a very good question, given the costs associated with implementing software and hardware that is supposed to enable collaboration. Whether collaboration actually does occur or increases is another point entirely. If a team or division was not known for its collaborative efforts before an initiative it is unlikely that throwing resources at the problem will change things. Helping team members to develop their collaborative capacity should be the first step to creating a team that can use technology to further enhance their willingness to collaborate.

Creative commons is the way forward for dealing with so many our challenges within society and business. But the culture is very different from that we have created in the social Darwinistic (read dog-eat-dog) corporate scuffle. Re-thinking our approach to how we share what we create goes along with the re-think that we need to do concerning how we use or squander our natural resources. Sharing Knowledge and Staying Safe

What does ’safe’ mean these days ? – none of us really know the direction that social media will take next and where our identity will appear. But the same sort of anxiety is being felt across the corporate world in terms of how can we share information quickly and effectively but maintain a boundry or ‘membrane’ with the outside world.

The purpose of a membrane is to allow ‘information’ to travel in both directions. In other words the question we need to ask is “How can we stay in intimate connection with the larger field of knowledge and maintain an ‘identity’ and ‘brand’ with respect to our own corpus of knowledge.

Bertrand Duperrin poses the question “Does enterprise 2.0 threaten your security ? ”

This is a core question – or should be – for people working in the field of knowledge management. Of course we should also be mindful that wherever we are going , we are going to get there sooner than we think.

In a previous post I talked about how much we can learn from bacteria in terms of collaboration. Collaboratively they are extremely sophisticated. Bonnie Bassler gives us an amazing presentationat TED and the fact that bacteria can use ‘quorum sensing’ to respond to their environment is a little breath-taking.

What is it that we want to make of the world?

Choice is at the center of making change. We all intuitively know we have to change the way our species lives. That means making changes to the way we live our own lives. This is getting very personal. And if you are like me – uncomfortable.

I go on and on about collaborative intelligence and one aspect of this form of intelligence is how we coordinate our collective capacity. However there is a deeply personal aspect – the uncomfortable and unpopular decisions we are being called to make.

The ‘Oneness Project’ represents an thoughtful exploration of this important dialogue. Real collaborative intelligence demands ‘glocal’ decisions – choices that are made at a very local intimate level but that honor what we need to do globally to write a new story for our species.
