The early alchemists who attempted to change base metals into gold were the predecessors of our modern-day scientists. Their efforts could be considered as metaphoric of our present day attempts to transmute physical comfort into psychological well-being. Material possessions into peace of mind. Advertisers would have us believe that with a better car, bigger home, more megapixels, that we will be happier. That might be true but by how much? Then of course there is a question of how we pay for these things.
In the flurry of working harder, longer or even extra an job, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture. We literally don’t have time to reflect upon the meaning of our lives. Like the old adage “too busy mopping the floor the switch off the tap”. In the turbo-charged world we live in, it is becoming more challenging to maintain a balanced perspective on our lives.
