There is a weird little book by Donald E. Brown called ‘Human Universals’ that explores, in a very detailed fashion, the things that all humans share. Brown is an anthropologist and the book is a little dry but beneath the detail lies a very intriguing point. From color classification to facial expressions and lots in between Brown demonstrates that human beings the world over have a great deal in common. Whether they wear a pinstriped suit or a loin cloth – scratch the surface and you find a very common set of features that could be described as ‘humanity’.
When I researched ‘human universals’ I tripped over a little video showing how Nokia has used the concept to design one of their latest phones.
So technology is beginning to tap into our commonality and possibly bringing us together as a species – the continents are drifting back toward each other.
